Tara. 20, Indian, lit major studying in Singapore.

Reader of books. Drinker of tea. Expert at sleep, stress and snark.

All the usual fandoms, really. Benedict Cumberbatch's cheekbones, Stana Katic's hair, Cersei Lannister's bitchface, Mary Crawley's eyerolls, Doctor Who's existence. I love Loki in a not very low-key way. Also polar bears. Because they're brilliant.

Little Women (1994)

Mr. Bhaer really bothered me the first time I read Little Women.
He’s grown on me, though.
But I will never, ever be ok with Amy and Laurie. That was bad to begin with, and then they were SO HORRIBLE in Jo’s Boys. Ughhh.

a) I was just thinking of re-watching this movie today (never really watched it properly, always preferred the book) and b) I always LOVED MR. BHAER! I even liked Amy and Laurie—no one else seems to, somehow?—but they were so snobbishly, artistically adorable, even in Jo’s Boys…

I loved the movie. I loved the books as a kid, but when I re-read them around a year ago, I don’t know, they seemed so preachy? I still love them, but a little less than I did before.
And haha yeah, no one seems to like Amy. Jo is always the best, though.

The preachiness happens a lot—try re-reading Pollyanna or even the Anne books—but hey, product of their time, right? I still love them, partly because, of course, I’m reading them with so much nostalgia—but also because they’re still really good books.
And yes Amy just does not get enough love!! Jo is clearly meant to be the best, although I think Meg has her moments (“the jelly won’t jell!”); I never really liked Beth, but I mean Amy was tiny and fun with her terrible grammar and her made-up games and then she had to deal with so much—being the younger sibling who wasn’t perfectly self-sacrificing like Beth, but was actually human; dealing with her love for art when clearly she couldn’t afford the lifestyle she wanted; trying to be sophisticated and subdue her temper, and she did have a temper quite as bad as Jo’s, really—and then Beth died and she had to do all that growing up so fast and OKAY I AM GOING TO STOP NOW but this is what happens when you engage lit majors in conversations about their favourite books
